Did you know Sioux Falls was called out on a national level at a locat conference in 2014 for being 1 of 3 major cities in the United States that does not have it's own city flag?
Louise Avenue Gets A Facelift
If you have had the pleasure of driving on Louise Ave this week, near the Empire Mall, you were likely to experience a bit of congestion. The City of Sioux Falls began what is sure to be quite the project between 41st and 49th Street. Louise Avenue will be completely reconstructed in this 8 blocks. 49th street will also be reconstructed within 500 ft of Louise Avenue.
Monday March 20th crews began demolishing the adjacent parking lots of Kohls, Gordmans, and the Empire Mall. These areas will be modified to make room for the new lanes being added to Louise Avenue. The end goal is to have 3 lanes in each direction (6 lane roadway total) along with a center raised median. Louise Avenue and 49th Street will be resurfaced upon completion. New LED traffic lights will also be installed closer to the end of the project.
While congestion in this area has been an issue in the past, another topic of concern for the 49th St and Louise intersection has been flooding. In recent years, heavy rains have done considerable damage to the area due to overloaded drainage systems. The city will be combatting this issue with improved sewer systems, improved storm drainage, and a larger water main.
The city is hoping to have the project completed by November 11th, 2017. In the meantime, traffic will be reduced to 1 lane in each direction.
