Did you know Sioux Falls was called out on a national level at a locat conference in 2014 for being 1 of 3 major cities in the United States that does not have it's own city flag?
Microbrews Growing In Popularity
As the trend of home brewing and unique breweries grows, more and more people are finding a new appreciation for beer crafting. In Sioux Falls, this is more apparent with the recent opening of a few local breweries and taprooms.
Fernson is gaining popularity day in and day out in the Sioux Falls area and nationwide. This unique rusticly modern brewery has been open for about 2 years. They have 2 locations in Sioux Falls including north of I-90 off Cliff Avenue (1400 E Robur Drive) which houses the brewery itself. The second location is a taproom only in downtown Sioux Falls (201 N Weber Ave). Fernson started when owners Derek Fernholz and Blake Thompson were introduced by a mutual friend because of their love and passion for brewing beer and wine. Both had hopes of opening a brewery in the area and just needed to find someone with the same aspirations. Derek is a certified beer judge and Blake had spent time in Napa Valley working on a vineyard. Together they came up with a business plan to supply Sioux Falls with craft beer made with quality, creativity, and a friendly atmosphere in mind. Fernson's business model encompasses ease of availability, mindfulness of the environment, and ingenuity of flavor. All of which make this stop a fan favorite! The brewmasters are always coming up with specialty brews based on season, events, or techniques. The breweries "Core lineup" includes Farmhouse Ale, Lion's Paw Lager, India Pale Ale, Wheat Ale, & Porter. These beers are always available at the taprooms. Be sure to try the Lion's Paw (my personal favorite) and tell me what you think!

Downtown Sioux Falls is home to Woodgrain Brewing Company located at 101 S Phillips Ave. Woodgrain owners Jason Currie-Olson, Steve Hartman and Ryan Van Tol envision Woodgrain as a place for patrons to enjoy each others company in a relaxed setting while sipping on beer made from quality locally grown ingredients. Woodgrain has been open since 2015. They carry 4 year round brews including the Wheat, Cascade Smash Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, & Milk Stout. Woodgrain brewmasters are always looking to push the envelope and have a large variety of specialty brews on the menu and in the works. These brews range from a red ale to pilsner to barley wine. My personal choice is Erin's Irish Red! The owners of Woodgrain have thoroughly enjoyed brewing at the heart of the city. They also thank the other local brewers in Sioux Falls by offering select brews from Fernson and Hydra on tap.

Looking for a little more edgy approach to beer crafting? Hydra Beer Company has embraced a metal themed taproom complete with dragons, guitars, and even a throne. Owners Chad Petit & Nick Murphy welcome all beer lovers but have really connected with people through their love of beer and metal music. Hydra Beer Company is located on the west side of Sioux Falls at 2425 S Shirley Ave. Beers on tap year round at Hydra include 8 selections; Immortal, Pale Horse, Death Breath V2, Hefeweizen, Unholy, Unholy Vanilla, Brewmortal, & Baroness. Just as their local competition Hydra also continues to perfect their craft by working on specialty brews available for a limited time. Although Hydra has a more hard core atmosphere as far as decor, the service and hospitality of the staff is just the opposite. Patrons can easily enjoy a good beer, good music, and clean taproom environment. Not sure what to try? I recommend the Immortal Brown Ale!

Many Sioux Falls residents have been very excited about the new found flavors and culture these breweries have brought to our city. I would highly recommend visiting each establishment and finding your own favorites to support our local brewmasters. Especially with nice weather just around the corner, who doesn't love a nice cold microbrew!
