On the top of the holiday tradition list for many families is the annual photo with Santa Claus.  The magical moment where children get to sit on the jolly fella's lap and whisper their most desired Christmas wish, is something many parents also get joy from. Capturing this moment on film is not only a time honored tradition but also a very valuable keepsake!

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced all the way back to 280 A.D. to the birth of St. Nicholas.  He was known for his kindness and spent much of his time traveling to the countrysides.  He would visit families in poverty and give away much of his inherited wealth.  He became known as the patron saint of children and sailors.  Many early images of St. Nicholas contained stockings full of toys, fruit, and other offerings to needy families.  On the anniversary of his death, December 6th, many Dutch families would gather to remember his kind heart and gift giving spirit.  As these families migrated to New York and stories of St. Nicholas merged with American culture, Sinter Klaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas) evolved to Santa Claus.

Since the early 19th century, gift giving has been a part of the Christmas celebration.  In the 1820's newspapers started promoting holiday day shopping advertisements and gift giving ideas.  Many of the these ads contained images of the newly popular "Santa Claus".  The idea of visiting Santa in a store became hugely popular in 1841 when a Philadelphia establishment advertised getting pictures taken with a life size Santa Claus statue. The event was such a huge success, it didn't take long for other retailers to recognize the importance of Santa Claus and luring children and parents through their doors by offering a real life Santa on hand! This began the tradition of photos with Santa!

If your family needs their chance to meet Jolly old Saint Nicholas (aka Santa Claus) this Christmas season, there is still time!  Santa Claus is scheduled at the following locations in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area:
