For 38 years the St. Patrick's Day Extravaganza Committee along with the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has been hosting a parade in downtown Sioux Falls in honor of St. Patrick's Day! This year's event will take place March 18th, the day after St. Patrick's Day. Festivities start downtown at 11:00 AM at First National Bank. The program gets underway with the reading of the opening proclamation, painting of the shamrock, and crowning of Ms. Shamrock. Irish music will be provided throughout the day from special guests Khartum Temple Pipes & Drums out of Winnipeg, Canada. This 20 piece pipe and drum band will also be traveling around Sioux Falls March 17th to play at local schools and businesses.
The St. Patrick's Day parade will begin at 2:00 PM on Phillips Avenue. The VanGaurd squad will be doing a fly over with green smoke to signify the beginning of the parade. Parade entries will travel from 13th Ave to 4th Ave. Floats entered in the parade include Irish families, the Sioux Falls Irish Club, and local businesses. All entries are enouraged to have an Irish theme to drive the route. Every year the committee chooses a parade Grand Marshal that has an Irish heritage and involvement in the Irish community in Sioux Falls. This year's Grand Marshal is Larry Fuller. The parade will last approximately 1 hour.
The event is free to the public to attend. St. Patrick's Day buttons will be on sale for $3. Proceeds benefit the Special Olympics and the Ronald McDonald House of Sioux Falls.
